The Union Budget was quiet on the...

...introduction of REITs. If these vehicles actually do see the light of day, how will they benefit investors?
Ashraf Sheth, Ahmednagar
True, REITS continue to be a grey area in the Indian context. It is not surprising that the Budget did not mention them, since plans to introduce these investment vehicles in India are still at a rather basic stage. If introduced, they would definitely boost developers’ confidence in terms of availability and sustainable flow of funds. In terms of the hospitality sector, REITS would concentrate on hotels, leisure. They would certainly do a lot to raise the sector’s profile in the eyes of the international investor community, which still tends to view the country’s investment environment as immature and inefficient. As such, REITS would be a definite blessing.
